PORA Zimbabwe is a British registered charity (charity number 1197779) founded in 2021 to support the After Rape Clinic (ARC) in Zimbabwe. We have built a Partnership on Rape Aftercare.
PORA also means ‘to heal’ in the Shona language of Zimbabwe.
The After Rape Clinic, also known as the Adult Rape Clinic, is the only institution in Zimbabwe that gives comprehensive care to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), offering free medical, legal and psychological counselling. Since 2009 ARC has provided counselling support to more than 8,000 rape survivors and has reached more than one million people through public campaigns on the illegality of sexual violence, providing vital information on reproductive health and accessible healthcare services in Zimbabwe.
The Trustees of ARC requested help from the Zimbabwean diaspora to support their work because every woman and child deserves their sexual and reproductive health and rights to be protected.
PORA was created to answer this call to action.
Nurse counsellors deliver care, testing and comprehensive treatment on the frontline of Zimbabwe’s rape pandemic. Post-trauma counselling and somatic therapy are on-going for months after the attack, both one-to-one and through support groups. ARC connects survivors with social and legal services, and coordinates with the police to provide medical affidavits for the public prosecution service.
“#72” is a public campaign to raise awareness that accessing treatment in the first 72 hours after an assault can be life saving. In 2023, ARC tested 1,377 rape survivors for HIV. The 694 survivors who reported within 72 hours and received post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) did not seroconvert from an HIV negative to positive status. Emergency medical services for rape survivors is critical in the reduction of new HIV infections.
ARC envisions a world where sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is unthinkable in all its forms. We are working to transform the culture in Zimbabwe to protect women’s sexual and reproductive rights, and particularly the rights of children to flourish with healthy minds and bodies. Please join the movement.
